Real Name: Damon Grelts, unknown to the general public
First Appearance: The Adventures of Lazer Man, 1990
If you genetically spliced together Batman, Iron Man, and Mega Man, then you'd get perhaps my most influencial character ever, the immortal Lazer Man. It's no understatement when I say that he's shaped just about everything that I've done since his creation back in sixth grade. In the past I've had three characters that more or less embodied what amounted to being me at the time; the most recent is the realmwalking ninja Mani, and before that was my Junior Force persona, aptly named Damani. Lazer Man, however, was the first. He is, without a doubt, the Hulk Hogan of my characters.
Lazer Man was created back in sixth grade as the result of an art project, in which we were to write and illustrate our own books. Being a big fan of Mega Man 2, I decided to do something along that vein, and hence
The Adventures of Lazer Man was born. I kid you not when I say his early drawings looked like a Lego figure, but that couldn't stop his bad-assed tendencies. He took on the sinister Dr. Sludge, his former assistant that took several of his robotic constructs and reprogrammed them for evil. Yeah, I know, highly original and all, but it worked! Of course our hero triumphs over the forces of evil, and Dr. Sludge escapes, vowing payback the next time they meet. At this point, Lazer Man enters semi-retirement.
The Lazer Universe: About a year and a half later, Neil starts getting into comics, and using that influence, we create
The Lazer Universe, our own world of super-powered heroes and freakishly overpowered villainy. As we brainstorm with new characters, we decide to give our old friend Lazer Man a makeover and reintroduce him to the world. Lazer Man is reborn, and takes his rightful place as one of the world's greatest heroes. He's given a bit more
back story this time around; of course we knew that he was freakishly rich, but we learn why (inherited the fledgling company after his parents were killed in a car accident), and fill in some little details here and there (he's French/African American, speaks about five
languages fluently, has has his share of women problems, possesses a black belt, etc, etc). Of course even still his story continues to develop.
Random Sidenote: Why is Lazer spelled with a 'z'? Well, back during the Lazer Universe days of high school, we faced competition from another comic universe run by a friend of mine, that being
Zodiak, spelled with a 'k'. Want to know something even more random? Zodiak Comics was run by none other than my friend Kris, the webmaster for a site that you might have heard of by the name of
Animation HQ.
Little Known Fact: There was actually an unofficial sequel to The Adventures of Lazer
Man, written by Kris's brother Tim as a creative writing project. I'd love to actually be able to get my hands on it, since it's been so long since I've actually seen it.
The Future: Lazer Man will always have a place. His adventures will continue, and for your reading pleasure, I've included a portion from a little side project that I found myself working on recently. Here's to the future of Lazer Man!
Stories? Oh yeah, I've got plenty of those.
It's a natural part of the job, I suppose. When you make as many enemies as I have, you're bound to have a few tales to tell. At last count, well, I had actually lost count of the number of individuals that wanted to cause me no specific amount of harm. It was a fact that I was prepared for the moment I started doing what I do.
There are a few incidents that stand out, mind you. Not everything blends together into one villainous blur. But what stands out to me the most? Heck, what doesn't? Dealing with some costumed megalomaniac is fast becoming a daily event in my world. However... there was a time... a time where I found myself dealing with someone that I once trusted. Someone that, though he may not realize it, was perhaps the strongest catalyst in me becoming who I am today.
My name is Damon Luc Grelts. Very few know it, but my name also happens to be Lazer Man.
This is one of my stories.
